Blackest Night

Blackest Night #3 I'm not a fan of a lot of his work, but man. Geoff Johns can be such a heavy hitter. For such a big event, I love that he isn't skimping on the little moments that hold everything together. Barry going in on Hal for saying death is overrated was a beautiful scene. Blackest Night- Batman 2 It's a little weird seeing Damian so expressive. So much Bat trauma with parents, ow. Blackest Night- Superman 2 Kara turning against her father when he's acting so differently is awesome. Blackest Night- Titans 2 The nature of comic book deaths are perfect for this type of event. Using Donna's dead son and husband to target her is lethal. Green Lantern Corps #40 Real wartime energy here. Also enjoying this B-plot between the Star Staphire and Sinestro Corpsman that will almost surely end in betrayal. I like how unusual circumstances can bring out unexpected qualities in characters.  Green Lantern #46 Sinestro. Ugh, stupidly well written. I love that for all his a...

Army @ Love

Army @ Love Issue #1 Bad people doing bad things. Interested to see how things evolve.  Army @ Love Issue #2 This is scarily realistic. So far it looks like everyone is awful except maybe Beau. Therefore, I need to not attach myself for the moment when he inevitably dies.  Army @ Love Issue #3 I have to say I'm hooked. I love the drama and the high emotions within these interpersonal relationships.  Army @ Love Issue #4 Not sure how I feel about him not caring about his wife's infidelity. I guess there's still so many other places for that type of drama, but there was such a big buildup and that moment felt like a deflation. I'm waiting for this all to fall apart, it looks like the events for the collapse are in motion.  Army @ Love Issue #5 I thought that Baghi was a term I just didn't know. Just finally seeing that we're in "Afbaghistan." Wondering why the change, when it's so direct.  Army @ Love Issue #6 I wish I had more to say, I'm just ...

Tomorrow's Stories

Tomorrow's Stories #1 Jack B. Quick was pretty basic, slightly funny.  The Greyshirt story just made me a little sad lol.  First American shows Moore being overt with his critique, which is not bad, but I get the sense he really hates the exaggeration and mind numbing nature of Jerry Springer.  Absolutely love the art here, it's the selling point of a simple story.  Tomorrow's Stories #2 Love going through this first story with the thematic and written context translating across time periods, and also putting the full time periods in order. It's just a joy to follow and track. Super fun story. The Jack B Quick stories are slightly amusing due to how out there they are, and the slightly varied level of acceptance by the people around him. Other than that, it's been pretty much whatever. So far, I feel like The Cobweb is being saved by great art, but even so, the plot feels so short and thin. Love how explicit the F.A. commentary is, and it has some of the ...

Rick Veitch's Swamp Thing

Swamp Thing (1982) #65 Great fresh start. I wondered where things would go after Swamp-Thing's character development seemed "complete." I like that Swamp-Thing viewed his job as over and just wants too spend time with Abby. I wonder if/when/how he'll regain that deep connection with humanity. Swamp Thing (1982) #66 This is some great stuff. I love the psychology examinations and questions. The stuff about why Nihilism is so prevalent still rings true today. Veitch's art also helps create this sense of a grand adventure. Loving this already. Swamp Thing (1982) #67 Poor Grundy. I like that there is deeper lore with him that's being tied into Swamp-Thing. Swamp-Thing's replacement already seems sufficiently advanced, I wonder what growth looks like for it. The Hulk reference was unexpected but silly. Swamp Thing (1982) #68 Alan Bolland. At first I thought Bolland was a typo or just me misreading. I like how Abby and Liz found solace in each other, knowing the...

Boy Maximortal

Boy Maximortal #1 Super unflattering portrait of Stan here. I wonder if the focus will be more on the comic side of things or exploring True-Man as a boy. It'll probably be half and half, but I hope it swings more to the comic side. Boy Maximortal #2 A lot of different angles. A lot to dwell on. Boy Maximortal #3 So much distraction, but I like the general strokes. Boy Maximortal #4 The historical aspect of this is just so strange. It really does feel like there are two separate stories being told, which hurts them both. I think the best stuff from this combination was the direction of Wesley taking his comic books and trying to implement the ideas of real solutions, (which seem anithetical to how comics operate) and struggling against the fear and manipulation of the world.

Bratpack/Maximortal Super Special

Bratpack/Maximortal Super Special #1 This is kinda dissimilar to Bratpack and kinda dissimilar to The Maximortal. The end result shrug. Not compelling. I don't think the grandiosity and the transformation of reality worked here, especially because of how drastic of a shift this presentation is from Bratpack. This sort of rewriting, or at least, reframing of the ending, was eh. Bratpack/Maximortal Super Special #2 This issue of the special really fell flat for me. I think it's because of how into the world of The Maximortal we're getting into, when that was just a side note in his comics. It was the least interesting part about those comics, and it is now the least interesting part of this special.

The Maximortal

The Maiximortal #1 I'm guessing this is another evil Superman story. The Maximortal #2 Let's see what this direction is. Right now Wesley has his innocence but I doubt that'll last. Not super into this (partially due to reading this straight after Brat Pack no doubt), but I have to see how it's going to play out. The Maximortal #3 I do find this path through (the somewhat fictional) history to be interesting. A little hesitant due to how much setup, maybe even meandering, there's been with not too much depth and only 4 issues left. The Maximortal #4 Didn't even make the Sidney -> Disney connection until the font pointed it out. I thought this would be more about the "person" True-Man, but these last two issues or so have been more about the character and the world around him. It's a little disjointed but I do like the focus on the creators and creator rights, which I have to imagine is something that Rick is passionate about. The Maximortal #5 ...

Bratpack

Bratpack #1 I feel like this is far too cynical for me. The "What if Batman and Robin were gay lol????" just made me roll my eyes, and I feel like the sexual abuse and predatory relationship being used for so many cheap punchlines is pretty disgusting. It's dark, but so far I feel like there's nothing clever or powerful that's being said about superheroes or the nature of sidekicks. Bratpack #2 We'll see where this is headed...I greatly prefer dark to edgy. Bratpack #3 It's hard to be engaged when everything's awful, things just get worse, and there's no apparent lesson to be learned from the bleakness Bratpack #4 Everything going back to True-Man is neat, but other than that...yeah, no. Bratpack #5 Lame! The heroes needed sidekicks for the sake of monetary reasons? Not new information. And as a critique of how comics operate, it's pretty low bar. Just an awful exercise in trauma porn, and doesn't work when all the characters are so clear...

Roarin' Rick's Rare Bit Fiends

Roarin' Rick's Rare Bit Fiends #1 "It's all so neurotic and Freudian" I love the work of a creative and constantly moving mind. I'm intrigued by the dream focus, but nervous that it'll be so loose that it'll be hard to discern meaning from it. Roarin' Rick's Rare Bit Fiends #2 This is very crazy. In a good way? In a bad way? I cannot tell. I think I like the concept and the discussions surrounding the work more than the work itself, but the comic is being used as a medium to explore dreams, so it's hard to remove that. Just a lot of thoughts going on and none at the same time. Just pure emotional expression is what I'm bouncing off. Roarin' Rick's Rare Bit Fiends #3 I wonder why the recurring Tiger. Why the same clothes for Rick? Roarin' Rick's Rare Bit Fiends #4 A lot of focus on comics, writers, and drawing (I wonder why...) Roarin' Rick's Rare Bit Fiends #5 This must be so cathartic. I wonder how he chooses th...

1963

1963 #1 Not sure what I can say other than this level of mimicry can only be done by someone who loves Marvel and is a student with a keen eye. I wonder where there'll be depth beyond being 1:1 Fantastic Four parodies. At this current moment, it feels a bit limited by the mimicry and I'm wondering what is substantial that's being said. 1963 #2 A Spider-Man pastiche this time. I guess these will be one-shots honoring Marvel's greatest? From a deeper level of what I was expecting, it feels one-dimensional, but it's a pretty great distillation of the time period's writing, characters, and art. I'm really loving how the lettering feels so perfectly of this time. I'll have to wait if I connect with this further as it continues. 1963 #3 Captain America and a lot of heavy handed propaganda. It's crazy how much of the Red Scare worked its way into comics. I was slightly shocked at the explicit references to real historical figures and events. Hypernaut i...

Illuminator

Illuminator #1 I thought this would be generic by the introduction, and for the most part this issue was, but there were some scenes I considered interesting, I enjoyed how the radio corresponded to Andy's transformation and how the transformation was described. The villain, however, was so plain that it was disappointing. I like the portrait of Andy that is being drawn but I feel like the way his self-doubts are being depicted are pretty surface level. Illuminator #2 The art is so weird. I wonder if the panels that are just black and white were because of time constraints because it does not feel like a stylistic choice. The lessons about faith really feel shoehorned in. I noticed it last issue, but the way it's formatted as part of conflict-resolution just feels too Sunday School. Due to some of the more mature topics here I doubt it, but it feels catered towards a much younger audience. I like the fact that Andy struggles and feel like that should be emphasized a lot more. I...

Spider-Man vs. Wolverine

Wow, this was just excellent. I loved the focus on internal monologue, it was perfect for this somber and melancholic story. It also showcased the differences between Logan and Peter perfectly. Peter being so out of his depth here was great. This is how you write a real, relatable Peter Parker. Capable and powerful, yet still just a college kid, the world of spies and killers isn't his. Through Peter's internal monologue there's a lot of struggle, which I loved. I thought a key point was how his guilt continued to manifest itself, first by profiting off his heroics, and later by committing a murder. I also like that through the greyness of the Cold War espionage, Logan's humanity is reaffirmed. This issue really hammers in Logan's restraint, an interesting point. There's some degree of beauty in how this story is a tragedy, as Spider-Man leaves lower than he enters, but I also wish there was slightly more in the meaning, in the conclusion of the change. Wolverin...
