Human Defense Corps

Issue #1 Started off slow, text and exposition heavy, but picked up by the end. Loved that against these powerful forces that he ended up being a one in three, a bad solider. And he turned into "a cartoon soldier." It was a pretty great flip on expectations. Hope more is done moving forward. Issue #2 This is cute. This is fun. I like the look of different average joe characters put in these military/alien scenarios. I thought my guy was about to kill his friend halfway through, that would have been crazy. It's also cool seeing Lex in the background doing his suspicious government work. This series does a good job of making the DC Universe feel lived in. Issue #3 I am super unfamiliar with these aliens. Were they created for this? The presence they have influencing the plot even after issue #1 is wonderful. Issue #4 Not much to say for this one. Nice, but the direction of the plot felt a little weak here. The execution just didn't wow me. I didn't feel like much w...

Avengers Twilight

Issue #1 The rise of a fascist police state, spread of misinformation, and overseas massacres. This is so modern. At first, it teetered on the edge of eye rolling to me, with how obvious the path to this specific dystopia was, but we're seeing a lot of similar things here in the present. It's a bad future, but not one that's unimaginable. The art and the designs add to the feeling of bleakness and futuristic darkness, which I thought was a highlight of the issue. I like the connective tissue between this future and specific characters/plots of the past such as the role SHIELD is playing in the creation of this new world, or Luke being a defender again. And of course Cap will always be a great character to explore a changing America. Great first issue. Issue #2 America being ran by a CEO. Real. I wonder when James Stark turns good. It's just bound to happen. Maybe a heroic sacrifice. Eddie being Red Skull is a nice twist, of course his influence creates a totalitarian g...

Avengers: Inc

Issue #1 I love the mysteries being set up here. Two dead Ant-Men are back! Hoping the OG Pym stays and it's not a LMD or something. The mysteries and tone felt just slightly noirish. I loved it. This no costumes, detective Avengers focus really works. I love the modern contemplation on what it means to be an Avenger, not new from Ewing. Issue #2 Not a super interesting mystery in this one, but still a fun story nonetheless. Not super into Vic Shade, just because his character comes off a little too strong while knowing nothing about him. I like the surrounding mystery regarding Pym a lot and Skurge dying again looks interesting.  Issue #3 This issue reminded me slightly of Top Ten by Alan Moore, specifically the crossing between mythology and superheroes and detective work. I love that. Fun work once again. Mostly passively/simply enjoying this, but that's not to take away from the writing. Some writers just have a skill of making their work easily readable and easily palata...

Avengers: No Road Home

Issue #1 Hulk lil broing Clint is brutal. Can't really blame him though. I'm guessing this will be less of a contest? But featuring Voyager, you can't really be sure about that. Issue #2 Poor Hawkeye. Luckiest man alive can't catch a break. I like his thought process here and showing how he's able to belong despite being out of his depth logically. Issue #3 Crazy nightmares, I like how they both were able to take place at a hospital. Clint's nightmare being "small" by having him lose his thumb was great at showing how human he is. Just a regular guy (comparatively) who needs all the assistance he can get. The lying twins especially have great designs and powers. Issue #4 Honestly? Feel like Nyx is boring. I like making her part of Marvel's Greek mythology, but she really shown herself as anything special. She's already super powerful and is on the quest to get her MacGuffins which will make her more powerful. Okay. Not much to her personality ...
