Chase

Issue #1 Not quite hooked, but I think this more clinical and secret organization approach to superheroes is interesting. I like the fire burning away at the pages. Issue #2 Chase being this worn down normal but not really normal worker. Good characterization. The art matches the vibe of the story so well. Intrigued.  Issue #3 Hoping we get more of the backstory soon. The Suicide Squad stuff was. pretty bare. Issue #4 Nice issue. I like the goofiness but also showing the mess the heroes leave behind. Issue #5 Weird issue. It feels kinda fillery. I guess it served as a way to highlight some of her background while still tying it into the greater DC universe?  Issue #6 This is less into the weeds of things than I expected. Still alright, the writing isn’t as dense as I would like, but still quality.  Issue #7 Wow a Batman issue and he’s not even on the cover. That’s insanity. Well I guess his symbol is there but still. Decent use of Batman, he felt more of a supporting char...

X-Men vs The Brood

Issue #1 Interesting to see how the different Brood factions operate. One that just wants to kill all they can and propagate and one that seeks to protect the Queen and maintain a hierarchy. Hannah is a tragic character.  Issue #2 Decent special. I liked some of the writing like Wolverine being God’s strangest angel, but some of the religious elements felt too melodramatic when there could have been a real connection to the faith of the characters compared to the trials they were put through. Pretty good prose, rough dialogue.

Hitch’s Real Heroes (2014)

Issue #1 Not a bad concept but the parody being so 1 for 1 was a little distracting. The writing is also just overboard compared to the amount of information delivered. Not really invested and I know the characters will be over the top on how annoying they are but I think the concept can lead to a good story. Issue #2 So…THAT just happened. More enjoyable than the first issue, actually makes me wish it was a bit longer.  Issue #3 I like how they’re not put together at all on the covers. They’re really thrust into their roles with no poise. I didn’t expect Brainchild to actually work with them and not blatantly double cross them. We hit the low point in the Hero’s Journey, now let’s see how they rise. Issue #4 The everyone being actors reveal is actually super good, bravo Hitch. For it to be cancelled and end here when developments were just starting to happen is actually brutal. I think the close pastiches of not just heroes we know but the movies of them made for somewhat of a low...

Ultimate Invasion

Issue #1 Was waiting for that moment of the lettering change. The Maker is a mover and a shaker, I like how much he represents the ability for things to be different. Stopping the spider from biting Spider-Man is such a good simple yet drastic change. I wonder what the pound of the Hickman set design here is, so far it doesn’t look like it connects to anything unlike everything with Krakoa. Issue #2 The Maker already messing things up, huh. I like the heroes that are lost or slightly changed, some of the specifics feel a little too set in stone right now, like with Hulk, but there’s still so much that can be done with everything. Obadiah being Howard’s Rhodey was a neat idea.  Issue #3 This hidden world, from a changed world we only know little about, very interesting. Good concept. Reed as Doctor Doom feels kinda gimmicky but it’s fun. Issue #4 Teenage Iron Man like Armored Adventures. Fun that Captain America does indeed exist. Things went at a breakneck pace this issue. A lot of...

Thank You, Liger

Never heard of Liger but this was a great tribute to him. Very expressive in the physicality, the emotional response from the crowd, and even a sneak peek in seeing DWJ thinking how cool this guy is. A beautiful display of respect and admiration.

Old Man Skywalker

I wish Disney made at least a series of an alternate world where it’s just full on power fantasy and rule of cool stuff like that. I don’t think it needs to be mainline like a lot of chud Star Wars fans do, but it would be fun to just see the powers being used in crazy and epic ways. Great action scenes here.

Death’s Head (1988)

Issue #1 Never really been a big Death’s Head fan but this was a good introductory issue. He’s running and open for business. Cool way to move forward. Issue #2 This version of Death’s Head is pretty fun. I like the small loopholes he makes for himself.  Issue #3 Yeah I don’t think the little sidekick is making it out here alive. I like how silly this comic is, that surprised me. The humor is good and alive. Issue #4 Not the craziest issue ever but a good A/B plot. Issue #5 Everyone’s awful but in a way that’s funny and not annoying to witness. Very hard to pull off.  Issue #6 The characters of this issue just didn’t captivate me. Issue #7 I feel like the competing bounty hunters aspects could have been better. The explosions didn’t really feel like a secondary source. Issue #8 Death’s Head throughout history. Meh. The Time-Lord trying to give him a message about him at the end was good though.  Issue #9 The far off future of 2020. I just want Death’s Head back in his own...

Warren Ellis’ The Authority (1999)

Issue #1 Hitch in full form. The Authority is looking to be all business. Much tougher than Stormwatch. I’m interested in learning more about Jenny Sparks. Issue #2 Killer Midnighter moment. And yeah Hitch is going crazy. Still figuring out the team dynamics, hope they’re expressed further down the line, but nice to see Jenny has a soft side, or at least a more chill one. Issue #3 I guess the number of posthumans will continue to rise.  Issue #4 Fun little group gathering, wanted slightly more out of the plot though.  Issue #5 Alternate Earths are back. Interesting. The Engineer had a great moment here, charming and still sincere.  Issue #6 Interesting angle for a parallel Earth. And wow Jenny has lived so much life.  Issue #7 I like the structure quite a bit, but I feel like the meat of this comic is pretty thin. The Authority just doesn’t feel like a group with any position of power/one that’s moving in a way that’s fulfilling its goal to change the world.  Is...

WildC.A.T.s / Aliens

Issue #1 This didn’t feel as earthshaking to me as I think it is.    The Fahrenheit death was unexpected but more of a shock thing, while Winter had a better kind of send off. It was weird for this to feature Stormwatch in an important context while being structurally based around WildC.A.T.s. I think there was a sense of horror and dread that comes with facing the aliens that could have been highlighted better.

Warren Ellis’ Stormwatch (1997)

Issue #0 A preview is a preview.  Issue #1 Cool designs for a time where I feel like superhero designs were some of the most repetitive and at a low. Just a really fun introductory issue. I liked the level of competence displayed and just how everything here meshed, from the sci-fi terrorists to the super powered personalities.  Issue #2 Pretty fun stuff, same as last issue but more. We’re thrown deep in the Stormwatch stuff, hopefully there’s some time to peel back and explain more.  Issue #3 This is just fun, I’m enjoying the level of subterfuge needed for the missions.  Issue #4 Nice little Justice League we have going on. This gives me slight Top Ten vibes. Just with how we get human moments with these weird characters. Issue #5 So much intrigue. Three different Stormwatches running around. I’m having fun with this. Issue #6 This is more wholesome than I expected. Issue #7 This was another fun one. Very much Star Trek vibes. At first I thought Jack was just brain...
