I like the tenderness of the vocals and how they often shift into a crescendo. I would say that’s the number one element of making these songs feel “big.” Sometimes, though, the drama of these moments doesn’t move me much. If I were to say why it’d be because there’s sort of a standard of expectation, and the threshold for doing something more with the drama isn’t met often. I do think more exposure will make me like the album more. Favorites: How Can You Mend A Broken Heart, Don’t Wanna Live Inside Myself, Remembering, The Greatest Man In The World

Gambit (1997)

Issue #1 Love the cards as narration boxes. Gambit stealing redemption...nice. The gangsters laying down a tarp so they could kill him without getting blood on the art is darkly funny. I like this hero's journey with Gambit and this religious framing. Was not expecting this to be so well written. Love the specificness of his voice and character.  Issue #2 Art here feels like when Frank Miller gets too experimental. A little much for my tastes. I hope things are stating to come together so we have more time exploring their impact. I like some of the mystery here, but not a lot of time left to really explore it. Issue #3 The jumping back and forth was irritating. Not focusing on an extended scene for the purpose of tension just muddied things up. I really didn't like that. Still wondering why Anielle seems so firmly attached to Gambit. Issue #4 I do think the message of finding your way back to the light is cute and valuable and makes for a good ending, but at the same time, I...

Thanos: Infinity Abyss

Issue #1 Love all the different Thanos designs. Silly and fun. It's a good use of the character to put him in a position where he has to be trusted while showing that he is very clearly up to something. Great start and setup. Issue #2 Not the biggest fan of the way Starlin depicts the mind, mixing some solid depictions of characters with the abstract, but interesting to see how people depict the mind in general. That's just the way he does it. This hidden figure looks like a Star Wars dude. Issue #3 Thanos v Thanos again for the first time? I do think the idea of him fighting against his actual self who was truly in his nihilist phase is a more exciting concept but this is still fun. I feel like we're spending some time aroung the nothing boxes and not with them. I'm not even sure I would want bigger roles for Spidey and Captain Marvel at this point. Issue #4 "Answer hazy. Ask again later." Starlin loves dropping these little comedic gems. Spider-Man and Capt...

Rann-Thanagar Holy War

Issue #1 Would be funny if Comet died again after all that complaining. Max's design just gets better and better. Good for him. A religious based war between Rann and Thanagar seems boring, but let's see how it develops. Issue #2 I like The Weird. Hoping he brings some excitement here. Issue #3 Starlin again with the too many moving parts. All the Starman stuff just has me going "...so?" That has been the worst area of jumping around so much. Issue #4 Funny how this is just a way for Starlin to keep telling his story that he had envisioned in earlier books. Reading Starfire's part made me realize how similarly written many of these characters are. So plot driven, but a lot of the plot feels rudderless. Issue #5 Just so emotionless. What an underwhelming form change. Issue #6 That was so much time spent on a generic backstory for a generic main villain. Issue #7 Yeah this just isn't for me (I think it's bad.) But seriously, I just have no interest in the s...

Mystery in Space (2006)

Issue #1 I like the new Eye design. The Weird story dragged on and on. Issue #2 Comet is an overly stuffy/gruff type for me. I do like how the character relationships aren't overexplained and mainly shown. The Weird stuff is getting a bit more interesting. Issue #3 The Comet mystery is going at a snail's pace with nothing much to sink my teeth into. The Weird's story is decent, I like how all the different selves are influencing him. Issue #4 The Weird is an obvious but fun story. Unfortunately, Comet feels substanceless.  Issue #5 I can respect and genuinely appreciate how Starlin ties his work together. If he has a vision he's gonna see it through, any means necessary. A little disappointed by the lack of Max, but with so little depth given to Comet, maybe it's best to limit the amount of characters getting attention. Issue #6 I need more from this. Issue #7 Yeah I might officially be a The Weird fan now. Love his mindset toward killing, thoughts about religion, ...

Hardcore Station

Issue #1 Not to be rude, but I when I read a lot of Starlin, I wish his art and his writing were at the same level of his vision. Then I wish his vision was better too. And this book isn't even that bad so far, just a very generic start with huge and cosmic ideas about vague concepts. And when our protagonist's name is "Chief Max Justice" with a design like that? It feels like a parody of the 90s. If there were more pouches I would absolutely be convinced that it was a parody of what was big at the team, I mean, just wow. And it has always been a personal pet peeve, but we are at a galactic crossroads of commerce with five million inhabitants and SOMEHOW we're stuck with just some guy. Maybe issue two will flesh things out, and I get completely hooked. Despite not enjoying this issue and not being the biggest Starlin fan historically, I'm open to having my mind changed. Issue #2 That first page was genuinely comedic gold. Boring issue otherwise (insect assass...

Lex Luthor: The Unauthorized Biography

Issue #1 Good story. I like the perspective of a normal guy who's finding out about the depths of /lex Luthor's evils, and how Clark Kent is using the interrogation to also find out what happened. I wish we got to sit more with Peter Sands' paranoia and really reinforce the idea that t his is a pretty average loser who is being targeted by this powerful man with endless connections. Also, Lex shows why he is such a great figure for Superman to face as a supervillain by being so totally evil and using his vast resources and intelligence for suffering. There is also so much to be said about the beautiful art and coloring. Great comic.

Martian Manhunter: American Secrets

Issue #1 I think the thing that I enjoy the most about the start of mystery stories is that they create their own little worlds. Because so much of the story is plot driven, all the missing elements and the shining points that are waiting to be connected are sources of interest and novelty for the brain. However, it can be hard for this interest to continue at the same level when so much time is given to this "finding out stage" and leaving less power when the connections are made. I feel similarly as of now. I like the 60s setting and the cold playing into J'onn's loneliness, but when we get into the weeds of things (that are present in this issue) there is less for me to like. Everyone talking about this "big question" which turns out to be a show, and the repeating elements that are now coming up in J'onn's life make for a super engaging setup, but then seeing a bunch of Lizard people feels like a letdown compared to the infinite options that wer...

President Luthor: Secret Files & Origins #1

Issue #1 I like how they do the press release character bios. Lex and Circe could have been fun.

Lex Luthor: Man of Steel

Issue #1 This is probably my favorite depiction of Lex because he's allowed to be genuine. I can get down with his hatred of Superman clearly being due to his insecurity, but him truly believing that Superman is a problem is just more compelling to me. And his ego is still present, immediately presenting his tower as a beacon that shines brighter over "his" Metropolis. Interesting to see the KGB members being referred to as bad men, but good guys. The good guys part is more focused on as a reason for their deaths. It's a strange view, but also similar to one that Lex has towards Superman. It's beautiful storytelling on how evil Superman can be depicted while doing nothing that is actually evil. Very great that he has no voice at all, Lex is quite literally speaking for Superman in their conversation. One issue and there's already so much detail given to his character. Issue #2 "Better under the sleeve than on it." Summarizes a lot of who  Lex is and...

Deathstroke

Deathstroke: Rebirth #1 This is just peak Priest. Love the political ongoings and this theme of family that's being set up. What an introduction.

Avengers Forever

Isssue #1 Hoping for some "Ant-Man" love here. A lot going on for a first issue, but I didn't mind it. Time stuff can be a lot to deal with so I appreciate already going all in. Hopefully things can stay a stable course. The Avengers based military slaughtering the unresponsive civilians was dark. Let's hope they're avenged. Issue #2 I like dysfunctional teams so this looks like an interesting squad. The most interesting components to me is a shaken Captain America and two different Hanks. I wonder how the different mental stages of Hank react to each other and if it causes either to change, and if Captain America can clutch up and be reaffirmed of his purpose. Issue #3 Cap's a little melodramatic, but he's recovering from some very fresh wounds, so I'll give him a pass. Yellowjacket is fully on go mode. I feel like he has to eventually fight the team or cause huge internal problems. It was strange seeing Kang give such a great speech, I loved that it...
