Warren Ellis’ The Authority (1999)
Issue #1
Hitch in full form. The Authority is looking to be all business. Much tougher than Stormwatch. I’m interested in learning more about Jenny Sparks.
Issue #2
Killer Midnighter moment. And yeah Hitch is going crazy. Still figuring out the team dynamics, hope they’re expressed further down the line, but nice to see Jenny has a soft side, or at least a more chill one.
Issue #3
I guess the number of posthumans will continue to rise.
Issue #4
Fun little group gathering, wanted slightly more out of the plot though.
Issue #5
Alternate Earths are back. Interesting. The Engineer had a great moment here, charming and still sincere.
Issue #6
Interesting angle for a parallel Earth. And wow Jenny has lived so much life.
Issue #7
I like the structure quite a bit, but I feel like the meat of this comic is pretty thin. The Authority just doesn’t feel like a group with any position of power/one that’s moving in a way that’s fulfilling its goal to change the world.
Issue #8
The conflict feels so A then B then C. I don’t see substantive struggle that leads to growth. I still have enjoyment from the characters and the art, but I wanted something deeper from a storytelling perspective.
Issue #9
A lot of setup, but unfortunately I doubt this added to the emotional weight of what’s next.
Issue #10
Just a lot of meh.
Issue #11
I love the pure joy the Engineer has. That was my anchor of the issue.
Issue #12
Eh. I think the characters are so charming and interesting which provides a nice framework, but what else is done with them? The story just feels too frictionless and generic for what it could have been.
